Details of Previous Walks, 2008
The highlights were c70 Lesser Black-backed Gulls on Ryde Sandbank,

(There were a "raft" 7 together!)
Rather quiet, but some birds of interest, the usual flock of Linnets,
and a male Sparrowhawk posing on a post, gave everyone spendid views.
This is usually where Nuthatches can be seen as the feeders here are close to the original nest site.
-unfortunately the birds have moved about 100m E. to nest in a different garden!
The feeders were still very busy with Great, Blue and Coal Tits.
We also had 2 Goldfinch, a Greenfinch and a Pheasant, along with Robin and Dunnock.
Long-eared Owls were the stars of the evening, 2 juv and 1 Adult were heard calling just past the Squirrel trail,
then on a grassy path to the W. 2 Adults were seen repeatedly by the whole party in good light.
Almost immediately the Nightjars were heard "Churring" then 3 were seen flying together,
about 10 altogether (5+ seen, 4 heard from 21.30),

Leaving the car park heading North, we saw flocks of Rooks coming in to roost, a Kestrel and a Buzzard.
The first Nightjar was heard at a clearing.
At the big clearing S. of the Study Centre Field we heard the first Long Eared Owl (Juv) squeaking, and saw/heard 3 Nightjars and a Woodcock overhead.
A further walk gave us more Long Eared Owls- including an Adult leaving the trees, Nightjar and Woodcock same one??
Several Glow Worms were encountered on the paths as we walked round.
By 11pm we found our way back to the Car Park and were amazed to find 4 more juvenile L.E. Owls all calling loudly.
One was seen by torchlight only 15ft away, it seemed unconcerned about us and carried on squeaking!
A memorable evening all round. (Even the weather was good)
Starting and ending with Mediterranean Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull,
Sanderling, Oystercatcher, Curlew, and Dunlin on Ryde sands,
1 Grey Plover by water's edge, 2 Great Crested Grebes at sea, also
2 Treecreepers in Appley Park
At Seaview Toll Road there was a Water Rail in the ditch with a Little Egret.
At sea 3 Kittewake, 6 Gannet, 1-oiled Razorbill
From the Esplanade in Seaview we found the female Velvet Scoter just offshore,
with Red Breasted Merganser and 2 Juv Shag.
Further along was a female Goldeneye, also a Buzzard perched in a (distant) tree.
